Hope on the Horizon
It’s the beginning of a new year, and yet so many people feel like the old one just won’t end. Yet hope may be the one thing that will get us through. There are many research papers and articles suggesting that hope not only makes us feel better, but helps us manage stress and cope better with adversity.
Even if you’re feeling down, there are activities you and your team can introduce to make people feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel – and that it’s not the proverbial train coming towards them.
One of these is goal setting – and having managers and other senior people in the organisation share their goals for the company, along with some of their own personal growth goals.
According to renowned hope researcher C.R. Snyder, “Hope implies that there is the possibility of a better future.” By sharing plans for the future, and working on goals together, morale rises, people actually do feel better, and work improves.
So, at a time when so many are feeling overwhelmed by yet another round of restrictions, it’s good to remember there are also people who are optimistic about tomorrow and taking steps to give us all hope. My mom is one such person. This morning she forwarded me a message from Jeannine “JT” Taylor, Founder, CEO and Publisher of KawarthaNow.
My mom ended her note to me with: “I am planting flowers”.
In the KawarthaNow newsletter, Taylor describes the conversation between two cartoon characters:
“Are you terrified of what 2022 may bring? Everything is so messed up.
I think it will bring flowers.
Oh, why is that?
Because I am planting flowers.”
Let’s all plant flowers and make this year our best one yet!
